Square vs Helcim for Canadian small businesses
Square prints a flat 2.5% in-person credit rate. Helcim prints interchange-plus margins. Interac cents only where each vendor published them.
Last updated 6 September 2026. About 15 minutes. Research from public vendor docs and CRA pages — not a hands-on lab test.
Square is the Canadian aggregator most sole props open first: free POS software, a printed flat card rate, and a published Interac line. Helcim is the Calgary-founded interchange-plus shop that prints its margin instead of a 2.5% sticker. Those are different products. Treating Helcim’s “near 2%” marketing line as a Visa rate is how you lie to yourself on a $40 tap.
This is a Canada-only head-to-head of Square and Helcim — card rates, Interac debit, CAD payouts, and hardware. Square and Helcim Canadian prices re-checked on public vendor pages, 6 September 2026. Buttons are official marketing URLs, not affiliate trackers. I have not processed a week of Smithville sales on either stack for NorthOffice.
Wider field (Stripe, Moneris, PayPal): payment processors for Canadian small businesses. Starting path without picking a brand yet: how to accept credit cards in Canada. Till software and offline Interac: POS systems in Canada. If the other shortlist is Shopify or Lightspeed: Shopify vs Square vs Lightspeed.
Who this comparison is for
- A café, market stall, salon, or service counter that needs Interac tap this month — not a custom merchant-account RFP.
- Someone who was told Helcim is “always cheaper than Square” without being shown interchange, card mix, or Interac share.
- A shop that already knows it wants CAD deposits to a Canadian bank account, not a US Square or US Helcim signup.

Square Canada — a printed rate, free software
Square’s Canadian fee page (6 September 2026) is a flat table. Card present: 2.5% when a customer taps or inserts Visa, Mastercard, or American Express. Interac debit: 0.75% + 7¢. Card not present: keyed or card-on-file 3.3% + 15¢; Square Online, eCommerce API, or an invoice paid online 2.8% + 30¢. That online line also covers Interac Debit via Apple Pay or Google Pay — Square says so on the same page. Cards issued outside Canada add +1.5% on cards issued outside Canada. Core POS software is Free (no monthly fee for core POS). Hardware starting at $69 on the Canadian POS pricing page. The contactless Reader was still listed at $69 listed for Square Reader with the same 2.5% / Interac pair. Square’s POS FAQ repeats no monthly processing fee, no setup fee, no PCI-compliance fee on that public page.
Payouts: Standard next-business-day deposits; Instant Transfer 1.5%. The Reader page also says next-day transfers are standard and that Instant Transfer funds are generally available within about 20 minutes, subject to the bank. Offline: Offline session up to 24 hours; Interac does not work offline. That last sentence is the one rural Ontario shops miss.
Square Payroll is still not a Canadian product. Staff need a CRA payroll tool. Square for Retail Plus ($79/month per location; published in-person credit discount 2.45%) sits on this site’s POS page from an earlier retrieve; today’s POS pricing page we opened emphasized the $0 core app and did not reprint that SKU. Confirm Retail Plus on Square’s Retail product page if inventory POS is the job — do not treat the older figure as re-verified today.

Helcim — interchange-plus, Interac in cents
Helcim’s about page describes a Calgary-founded payments company. The public pricing page (6 September 2026) repeats Public pricing page: no account monthly fees, no minimums, no statement fees, no PCI fee, no setup fee, no cancellation fee. Card pricing is interchange-plus, not a Square-style sticker. First band ($0–$50k monthly credit-card volume): Interchange-plus in-person (first volume band $0–$50k): interchange + 0.40% + 8¢ (helcim.com/pricing FAQ, same table as interchange-plus). Keyed and online, same band: interchange + 0.50% + 25¢. Volume discounts on the same FAQ: $50k–$100k: in-person interchange + 0.35% + 7¢ / keyed+online + 0.45% + 20¢. $100k–$500k: + 0.25% + 7¢ / + 0.35% + 20¢. $500k–$1M: + 0.20% + 6¢ / + 0.25% + 15¢. $1M–$5M: + 0.15% + 6¢ / + 0.15% + 15¢. Source: https://www.helcim.com/pricing/. The interchange-plus explainer is https://www.helcim.com/interchange-plus/ — that URL timed out when this page was written, so every Helcim margin here is taken from the pricing FAQ table retrieved the same day.
Interac: Helcim’s pricing FAQ (6 September 2026): Interac Debit 9¢, or 12¢ for tap. An earlier retrieve of Helcim’s Canada fee-disclosure page listed Chip & PIN 9.0¢ and Flash/tap 12.5¢ with volume bands that can lower those cents — that legal page was not re-fetched on 6 September 2026. Published Interac figures are Interac debit at a reader — not Interac e-Transfer.
Payouts: Next-business-morning deposits on credit and debit; gross or net settlement. Hardware on the same pricing page: Smart Terminal $349 per unit + shipping, or $32/month for 1 year; Card Reader $199 per unit + shipping; Tap to Pay on iPhone +10¢ per Tap to Pay on iPhone transaction; optional 4G $7/month optional 4G wireless data. Helcim says it does not lease equipment.
Other published extras, still not a Visa rate: recurring +0.4% per recurring-billing transaction; chargebacks $0 if resolved in your favour; $15 if lost; ACH / EFT-PAD 0.5% + 25¢, capped at $6 (plus 0.05% on amounts over $25,000). Bank pull is not Interac debit and is not Interac e-Transfer.
Helcim’s own pricing FAQ says that for most merchants the total in-person effective rate is near or below 2%, and keyed/online below 2.5%. That is Helcim marketing, not a published Visa or Mastercard interchange table — this site does not invent a typical Visa rate. Interchange-plus looks cheaper than 2.5% on a basic domestic tap. It looks less magic on a premium card keyed from an invoice. You need volume and card mix. This page will not invent a “typical 2.1%.”

Worked numbers (published rates only)
On a $50 CAD in-person sale, using only numbers the vendors printed:
- Square credit at 2.5%: $1.25 fee, $48.75 before other costs. Square’s own fee page uses a similar card-present example.
- Square Interac at 0.75% + 7¢: $0.375 + $0.07 = $0.445. Square rounds the same $50 Interac example to $49.55 kept.
- Helcim Interac at 9¢ chip/PIN: $49.91 left. At 12¢ tap: $49.88 left. No interchange sits on those debit cents on the pricing FAQ.
- Helcim in-person credit: unknown until you add interchange. The published margin on the first band is 0.40% + 8¢ — $0.20 + $0.08 = $0.28 on $50 — plus whatever Visa or Mastercard charged that card that day. That sum is not printed here because Helcim did not print it as one number.
Those examples ignore GST/HST on the sale, tips, refunds, and chargebacks. They are arithmetic on published rates, not your effective rate.
CAD payouts and hardware, side by side
Sign up on the Canadian site. Square: squareup.com/ca. Helcim’s public pricing is on helcim.com/pricing. If the dashboard is stuck in USD, you opened the wrong country. Both market CAD settlement to a linked Canadian bank account. Square’s standard clock is next business day; Helcim’s is next business morning, with a choice of gross (fees as a separate line) or net. Instant Transfer on Square is a paid add-on at 1.5%, not the default.
Hardware is where the “free Square” story stops being free. A Canadian Reader at $69 listed for Square Reader is the usual first box. Helcim’s public catalogue starts higher: a $199 reader or a $349 smart terminal (or $32/month for a year on the terminal). Tap to Pay on iPhone is +10¢ per Helcim transaction on that page — extra cents on top of the card or Interac price, not instead of them. Confirm Interac tap on the exact SKU before you buy a US magstripe leftover.
Square documents that Interac does not work offline. Helcim’s public pricing page we used does not print an offline-Interac sentence. Treat that as unverified, not as “Helcim works offline.”
When Square is the practical pick
- You need Interac tomorrow and you want a $0 software bill while you learn the till.
- Volume is small or lumpy (markets, pop-ups). A blended 2.5% is easier to forecast than interchange you have not seen yet.
- You also want Square Appointments, invoices, or a light online page on the same Canadian fee table — accepting that online cards are 2.8% + 30¢.
- Hardware budget is a Reader, not a $349 terminal.
When Helcim is the practical pick
- Interac is most of the volume and you will live on 9¢ / 12¢ instead of Square’s percentage-plus-cents debit line. Do the $50 math above on your average ticket before you switch.
- Credit volume is high enough that interchange-plus, with the published volume bands, is worth a statement you have to read.
- You want a Calgary-founded processor with no monthly account fee on the public page, and you are willing to buy Helcim hardware instead of a $69 Square Reader.
- You already know you will ask for a quote once you are over the first band — the FAQ prints those margins; it does not print your Visa mix.
When to leave this two-product fight
Need Shopify’s storefront and POS on one SKU file? That is Shopify vs Square vs Lightspeed, not Helcim. Need a bank-introduced terminal or a Moneris Flat Rate benchmark? That lives on payment processors. Online-only checkout with a printed CAD Interac debit fee is often Stripe, not a Square Reader. Invoices with e-Transfer still sit in invoicing software.
A practical pick
- First Canadian till, Interac this weekend, one person at the counter: Square + Reader.
- Same shop, but last quarter’s statements show debit-heavy volume and you will actually read interchange-plus: Helcim, then compare 9¢ / 12¢ to Square’s 0.75% + 7¢ on your average ticket.
- Already on Shopify or shopping Lightspeed: do not start here — use the POS three-way.
- No one standing in front of you: you may not need either terminal. Start with accepting cards as a small business.
